Cabell County Case Lookup

A Cabell County case search works best when you know which court holds the file before you type a name. Circuit Court, Magistrate Court, and municipal matters each live in a different place, and the clerk who keeps the record is the one who can certify it. Start a Cabell County case search with a case number if you have one. A party name works too, but then confirm the filing date, case type, and court on the result. Online results may list case events and document titles. That does not mean every paper is viewable from home. For certified copies, older records, or restricted files, the right clerk is still the source of truth.

Searching Cabell County Cases by Name

Match the portal to the court before searching by name. WVPASS covers public Cabell County Circuit Court civil and criminal cases. Coverage starts with cases filed July 1, 1999 forward. For Magistrate Court case information across the state, use MCRSearch. Neither one is a universal municipal docket. An ordinance matter may sit with the city court named on the citation instead.

  1. Read the court name on the notice and open WVPASS for Circuit Court or MCRSearch for Magistrate Court.
  2. Enter the last name and then the first name. Check known spelling variants when no result appears.
  3. Compare Cabell location, case type, filing date, and caption before opening a result.
  4. Open the matching case and review status, events, charges or claims, and available documents.

Two Cabell County Case Searches

The West Virginia Judiciary court-record access page routes visitors to two separate systems. Circuit Court records live in WVPASS, the public layer. Registration is required. Browsing case information costs nothing there. Viewing or downloading documents runs $0.25 per page plus a card processing charge. Purchased files stay in account history for 30 days. Nothing you download is certified.

MCRSearch is the other system. It is free and needs no account. It returns Magistrate Court filing, charge, disposition, event, party-role, and attorney information. For the actual documents, the Magistrate Clerk is the one to ask. Both clerk offices sit at 750 Fifth Avenue. Circuit requests go to Room 114, and Magistrate requests go to Room B-113.

Searching by Case Number

Search by case number when you can; it beats a name every time. A Cabell Magistrate sample number looks like 25-M06M-04949. Official payment examples show patterns such as ##-M##X-##### and M##M-##########. There is no need to decode each character. Type the identifier exactly as printed, keeping every separator.

Also check that the identifier belongs to a case search rather than a payment plan. The Magistrate payment site takes a Citation ID, Case ID, or Payment Plan ID. It is not the full docket. In WVPASS, enter the Circuit case number. Verify the Cabell court, caption, and filing date before paying for any document.

Cabell County MCRSearch Entry Gate

MCRSearch opens with a disclaimer and a "Click to continue" control. Accepting that gate is simply part of the search. It is not a sign that records are missing. Once through, type a first name, last name, or case number and submit. A statewide search can return up to 30 records in a typical result. Broad names demand close review. The official MCRSearch entry screen shows the required first step.

Filter by Cabell location and case ID to pull the right case away from similar names elsewhere in West Virginia. The disclaimer also warns that the clerk should validate the information.

What a Cabell County Case Search Returns

What comes back can be rich. A Cabell County case search result may show the court, case style, filing date, type, status, parties, counsel, events, charges or claims, disposition, and document headings. MCRSearch sorts its detail into sections. These include BASIC CASE INFORMATION, RELATED CASES, CASE CHARGES, DOCKET ENTRY, CASE EVENT SCHEDULE, CASE PARTIES, and ATTORNEYS. Expect some blank fields. They may not fit the case, or they may not be entered yet.

Case IDThe unique court identifier, including formats such as 25-M06M-04949.
Case LocationThe court and county; confirm Magistrate Court of Cabell County when appropriate.
Type and Filed DateThe classification and date the matter began.
Charge or ClaimThe allegation, statute, or civil amount associated with the matter.
Events and StatusHearings, docket entries, pleas, dispositions, or open and closed event indicators.

Missing Cabell County Case Results

No result does not mean no case. First check spelling. Then confirm the court level, the case number, municipal versus state jurisdiction, and the date range. WVPASS starts with public Circuit cases filed July 1, 1999. Anything older in Cabell County goes through the Circuit Clerk's archive or a paper-file request. And keep in mind that MCRSearch may list Magistrate case information without a document image.

Use the clerk fallback. Call the Circuit Clerk at 304-526-8622 or the Magistrate Clerk at 304-526-8642 or 304-526-8644.

WVPASS may mark a case nonpublic or leave out sealed or juvenile matters. Municipal cases may never reach either state portal. Ask the clerk whether a public index or order exists rather than assuming the case vanished.

Statewide vs County Case Search

Cabell County has no single county portal covering every trial court. The real choice is between the statewide systems and the right local clerk. WVPASS and MCRSearch are discovery tools. The clerk supplies certification, older files, and missing papers. The clerk also answers whether a file is public.

Cabell County IDX Is Different

Cabell County keeps more than one clerk, and that trips people up. The elected Cabell County Clerk runs an IDX system. It is not a trial-court docket. IDX holds deeds, liens, estates, probate orders, UCC filings, and vital-record indexes. Those papers matter in their own way. A docket search for a court case goes elsewhere.

Know which clerk holds the file. Circuit and Family Court records sit with the Circuit Clerk. Misdemeanor, traffic, preliminary felony, and small-claims cases sit with the Magistrate Clerk. The split is the key rule for a Cabell County case lookup. All three offices answer to the county name. Several share one courthouse address.

Access and Restricted Cases

West Virginia leans toward open court papers, though several categories stay closed. Sealed files, juvenile cases, adoptions, domestic-violence matters, and confidential Family Court material all carry protection. Family Court Rule 6 keeps orders and indices public. It treats the pleadings, exhibits, transcripts, and the proceedings themselves as confidential. WVPASS leaves sealed and juvenile material out of its results.

Sealing works through West Virginia Code ยง53-8-17. That statute pulls court information away from ordinary public inspection and off any court website. The route is a motion or subpoena. It must be backed by a legitimate reason. Even public case search data may hide protected personal identifiers. That gap is a safeguard, not a defect in your search.

Municipal cases sit outside this system. Cabell County offers no unified municipal search. When a citation names Huntington, Milton, or Barboursville, call that city directly. Ask which citation number, name, date, or other identifier its office needs. Also confirm whether you must inspect or copy records at the city office in person.

Cabell County WVPASS Limits

WVPASS runs on current browsers and works on mobile, but you need an account. One active session is allowed. An inactive session ends after 60 minutes. Search history lets you repeat a query. Purchase history keeps bought documents for 30 days, and there are no bulk downloads or case-update alerts. Check the WVPASS login and search portal, the official Circuit Court access point. Sign in there and run a Cabell County docket search.

Confirm you have the right case before you pay. The card is charged at once. A wrong-case purchase gets no refund. A WVPASS file is just a public download, not a certified clerk copy. If a record must carry authentication, save the case number. Then contact Room 114. Without the Cabell County Circuit Clerk, an account download can never become a certified record.
